Clean Livin is a “pulse residency” program for artists and researchers to explore off-the-grid soil building and biofiltration. On a former military base on the border of Utah and Nevada, Clean Livin’s is an area of extreme temperature changes, highly salinated soil and scarce water.
Klehm has built several systems to make the land habitable and see just how much amended soil can promote growth. Human and food wastes are composted, along with waste materials gathered offsite from nearby casinos; the humus balances the soil’s pH and increases water retention, allowing it to be seeded with native plants.
